Staying in control, with the clock rather than the balance as the dial to read
44p is what a 22-minute sitting is expected to cost at a tenth of a pound a press, and two of those a day for a year makes £321.20 and 267 h 40 min of thumb. A balance moves both ways and reports almost nothing. Minutes only accumulate, which is why they are the quantity worth watching and the quantity every control below acts on.

1
Why a balance misinforms and a count of minutes cannot
Two dials face anybody pressing a reel on a handset and only one tells the truth. A balance climbs and falls, and a lucky run can leave it higher at the end of an expensive evening. Minutes do nothing but pile up, and since the expected price of pressing is a fixed slice of whatever crosses the reels, they multiply out into pounds without scatter.
£1.20 an hour is that multiplication in its plainest form, worked at 10p a press and at the 300 presses an hour this publisher assumes rather than counts. £30.00 crosses the reels inside that hour and 4p in every pound stays behind. Nobody objects to £1.20. The whole case for reading a clock is that £1.20 has a yearly shape nobody would have agreed to in advance. Pace and sitting length are declared conventions, not readings off any device, and every input sits at the method page.
2
An hour, a sitting and a year, each with its price
£11.00 is what one sitting sends across the reels, being 110 presses of 10p inside the 22 minutes this publisher treats as one pick-up of a handset. 44p of it does not come back, on average. Waving a quantity that small away, over and over, is how the last row of the table arrives without anybody agreeing to it.
| Span of pressing | Across the reels | Presses | Not coming back |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 minutes | £30.00 | 300 | £1.20 |
| 22 minutes, one sitting | £11.00 | 110 | 44p |
| 44 minutes, two sittings | £22.00 | 220 | 88p |
| A week of the pair | £154.00 | 1,540 | £6.16 |
| A year of the pair | £8,030.00 | 80,300 | £321.20 |
267 h 40 min is the identical year counted in thumb instead of money, being 44 minutes a day taken 365 times, or eleven days, three hours and forty minutes end to end. Nobody picks eleven days. They pick a sitting, twice, and the eleven days assemble behind them.
44p a sitting compounds to £321.20 inside one year of 267 h 40 min

The scheme by its own spelling, its lengths and its edge
Gamstop is the spelling the national online self-exclusion scheme uses for itself, no capital after the G, with Gamstop Online as the longer form. One free registration, made in one place, shuts a person out of gambling accounts and apps at every participant. No licensed business chooses whether to join: the British online gambling licence carries membership inside it.
365 is how often a year a participant has to look. Since April 2020 a business taking British custom has run its customer list against the register at least daily, so an exclusion entered on a Tuesday night is live across the licensed market inside twenty-four hours.
Four lengths are offered at registration: 6 months, 12 months, 60 months, and 60 months renewing itself, with that renewal switchable off only inside the final six. Converted at two sittings a day, the shortest stands in front of 133 h 50 min of thumb and £160.60 of expected cost, the longest in front of 1,338 h 20 min and £1,606.00, which is 55 days, 18 hours and 20 minutes end to end.
Early release is not on offer and the scheme says so in capitals of its own. Nothing lifts automatically when a minimum runs out, a further 6, 12 or 60 months may be added, and doing nothing keeps a person out for as much as seven more years. Lifting one runs through the scheme’s contact centre and then a cooling-off no shorter than 24 hours, the exclusion working throughout. Participants are told for seven years afterwards that the person was once registered, and carry no duty to turn them away.
Its own terms, last revised 20 May 2026, publish the edge of the protection. Exclusion works where the gambling business is a participant, and the scheme states it has no way of keeping anybody clear of services run by organisations outside the arrangement. Betting shops answer to a sister scheme.
4
A ceiling that drops at once and climbs after a day
£11.00 buys a sitting, so a daily deposit ceiling divided by eleven gives the 22-minute pick-ups it will fund at 10p a press. £22 funds two, £55 funds five, and £110 funds ten, which is 3 h 40 min of thumb inside a single day. Whoever types a figure into that box is choosing a length of evening, and no caption beside it says so.
Direction, not size, decides the speed under a British licence. Downward is instant: a request to cut a ceiling must be acted on there and then, a technical fault the only excuse for delay. Upward costs a day and a second decision, since no increase may bite inside twenty-four hours and the person must return afterwards to confirm it. Three lengths have to sit among the options: one of a day, one of a week, one of a month. Where two of them overlap, the tighter takes charge.
17 January 2025 is the date elapsed time became a licensed duty, when businesses had to put in front of a customer, live, both the net sum spent and the time spent playing. That is this publication’s argument written into somebody else’s rulebook. The offshore policy read for these pages requires deposit limits and asks nobody to display a clock.
5
Shorter stops, and how far any of this reaches
24, 168, 720 and 2,160 hours are the four pauses the offshore rulebook obliges a business to put within reach. One button gets to any of them, nothing travels by email, nobody signs one off, and each bites the moment it is chosen. That rulebook also bars querying the decision, supplying soothing words meant to postpone it, and dangling a bonus to keep somebody going.
Britain writes the equivalent protection into how a product behaves: no active push towards recovering what has gone, towards a larger stake, towards exceeding what was already settled on, or towards going on after somebody has said they would rather stop. Luring back a person who has left is out.
Range is the measurement that matters, and each control above has an edge. A ceiling belongs to one account at one business, and so does a pause. A registration with the national scheme belongs to the licensed market, licence and membership being one boundary. Offshore the required exclusion is drawn around a single operator and all its domains, the published remedy for everywhere else being that the person exclude themselves business by business. Promotions converted into minutes across these pages sit outside the British licensing regime, which is why the national scheme is the broadest instrument anybody has: one action covers every holder of that licence, and nothing else reaches past a single desk.

Who answers, at what hour, and about whom
GamCare is who staffs the National Gambling Helpline, and one number serves for every hour the clock has: 0808 8020 133. Ringing costs nothing. Voice, live chat and message all get through. It is for somebody troubled by their own pressing and equally for somebody troubled by another person in the house.
BeGambleAware is the second address worth keeping, publishing written advice and routes into treatment. GamCare runs TalkBanStop as well, a bundle of the helpline, of blocking software, and of the national scheme, and records that the software carries no charge for anybody who has rung the helpline or come through its own support work. That article is dated 12 April 2021 and attaches no length to the free access, so none is attached here.
Three minutes on a telephone is shorter than one sitting of 22 minutes, and it is the only action urged anywhere on this page. Everything else here is arithmetic, poor company at two in the morning.
Questions
- Why watch the minutes instead of the balance?
- A balance carries scatter and a tally of minutes carries none. The expected price of pressing is a fixed slice of whatever crosses the reels, so minutes turn straight into pounds: £1.20 an hour at 10p a press and 300 presses an hour, both declared conventions.
- What does a 22-minute sitting twice a day come to over a year?
- 267 h 40 min of pressing, 80,300 presses, £8,030.00 across the reels and £321.20 not coming back. The daily figure is 88p, and the yearly one is never shown to anybody.
- What is Gamstop and who has to belong to it?
- The national online self-exclusion scheme, spelled Gamstop with no capital after the G, Gamstop Online in full. One free registration shuts a person out of gambling accounts and apps at every participant, membership coming with the British licence.
- Can a registration be ended before its time?
- It cannot, and the scheme says so in capitals of its own. Lifting one later runs through its contact centre and then through 24 hours or more during which the exclusion keeps working.
- How quickly does a change to a deposit ceiling take hold?
- Downward, at once, with a technical fault the only excuse for delay. Upward, not inside twenty-four hours, and only after the person returns to confirm it. Divided by eleven pounds, a daily ceiling gives the sittings it funds.
- How far do these controls reach?
- A ceiling and a pause each belong to one account at one business. The national scheme belongs to the licensed market, licence and membership being a single boundary. Offshore the required exclusion covers one operator and its domains.
